In some areas Antarctic sea ice was even increasing. That was until 2016, when everything changed. The annual extent of winter sea ice stopped increasing. Now we have had two years of record lows.

    Confirmed avian flu case in the Falklands; Stanley becomes control zone until November 23

    Members of the public are advised to follow strict bio-security measures and use the footbaths at common sites where they are provided.

    On Monday 30 October 2023 a Southern Fulmar was found dead at a Stanley property. As per current policy, while one dead bird does not reach the threshold of suspicion for avian influenza, birds that are not usually found in the Falkland Islands are routinely swabbed for surveillance. Unfortunately, this bird tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza. Given that this is an isolated case of one bird, that is only common off-shore, a full protection zone will not be declared. However, a temporary control zone has been declared and is attached. A declaration issued by the Falkland Islands Government (FIG) says:

     There will be two minutes silence at approximately 11.00 am marked by the firing of the saluting guns on Victory Green.

    Gilbert House, seat of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly has made public the arrangements for Sunday 12 November 2023, Remembrance Sunday. The Annual Service of Remembrance, this year commemorating the 105th anniversary of the end of the First World War, will be held in Christ Church Cathedral commencing at 9.30 am.

    On Tuesday, September 26th, at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York, Falkland Islander, Mensun Bound gave a lecture followed by a book signing of The Ship Beneath the Ice – The Discovery of Shackleton’s Endurance. The event occurred onboard the Wavertree, an old square rigger condemned at Port Stanley in 1910. This gathering was the culmination of a year-long book tour spanning the UK, USA, Canada, and parts of Europe and Scandinavia, during which time the book rose to Number 2 in the UK Best-Seller List.

    Falklands: Remote radar facilities in Mount Kent becomes new refurbished outpost

    MLA John Birmingham with Commander Brigadier Duff, he said the opening of the Mount Kent facility represented the first £10m of a £30m investment in BFSAI.

    Earlier this week marked the official handover of new build accommodation at the 303 Signals Unit Remote Radar Head Mount Kent in the Falklands Islands, from the contract team Ramboll Volker Fitzpatrick to 303 Signals Unit. The ceremony marked UK's long-term commitment to the Falkland Islands' right to self-determination.
