    Farmers' concerns on post-Brexit labour contracting reach PM's May desk

    The “significant number” of EU nationals the sector employed meant it was vital the government “ensures an adequate supply of permanent and seasonal labor”

    The UK food and farming industry wants assurances from the government that it will still be able to recruit enough staff from the EU after Brexit. The demand came as part of a manifesto drawn up by more than 100 organizations across the industry and sent to the PM. It urges the government to publish a white paper setting out its immigration plans “as a matter of priority”.

    Representatives from British Overseas Territories held a meeting at 10 Downing Street hosted by Sir John Randall, the Special Advisor on Environment to the Prime Minister. The issues discussed included Brexit, international platforms, renewable energy, climate change, HMG’s Oceans and marine protected areas agenda.

    Uruguay presented in London as main gateway to Latin America

    Ian Duddy, UK Ambassador to Uruguay said the Embassy in Montevideo can offer services in order to introduce Uruguay as a destination for British exports.

    A trade mission was held in London from 14 to 18 May to promote Uruguay to UK exporters. The mission was organized by Uruguay XXI, the investment, export and country brand promotion agency, along with the British Embassy in Montevideo, the British-Uruguayan Chamber of Commerce with the support of the UK Department for International Trade.

    Falklands Liberation Anniversary: Thursday 14 June program

    At 11.00 am a ceremony will be held at the Liberation Monument in front of the Secretariat building.

    To mark the Anniversary of the Liberation of the Falkland Islands from Argentine occupation in 1982, the following program has been arranged for Thursday 14 June 2018, in the capital Stanley, according to a release from Gilbert House, seat of the Falklands elected government.

    US and North Korea preparing for the Trump/Kim Jong-un summit

    Last Thursday Trump called off the meeting, due in Singapore next month, citing North's “hostility”. But both sides have since been working to get it back on track.

    A US team is holding talks with North Korean officials to prepare a possible meeting between President Donald Trump and the North's leader Kim Jong-un. The talks in the village of Panmunjom, in the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas, are the latest sign that the summit could take place after all.

    The leader of Italy's biggest political party has called for the president to be impeached after he vetoed a choice for finance minister. Luigi Di Maio of the populist Five Star Party said President Sergio Mattarella had caused an “institutional crisis”.

    Colombian election: clear cut right and left candidates will dispute the 17 June runoff

    A favorite from the start, Uribe’s protégé Ivan Duque, as expected managed the highest number of supporters, with over 7 million, or 39% of the votes.

    Colombia’s left and right will be holding a runoff to compete for the presidency in June after hard-line conservative Ivan Duque and ex-guerrilla Gustavo Petro scooped most of the votes in the first round of Sunday elections.<br />
    The second vote will take place on June 17, which could see Colombia's already fragile peace deal with the FARC guerrillas shaken.

    President Maduro ordered the military high command that the Armed Forces must sign a document of “loyalty” to the regime.

    After the presidential election in Venezuela on May 20, in which President Nicolás Maduro was re-elected, a wave of arrests has been reported among Venezuelan military in several parts of the country. As well as releases and new arrests of civilians and soldiers for political reasons.

    Colombia's presidential election: another referendum on the peace deal?

    The latest opinion polls released had Duque with an eleven percentage points lead. If no candidate gets a majority on May 27, a runoff vote will be held on June 17.

    On Sunday, Colombians will head to the polls to elect a new president. At play in this year’s election are a range of issues: Venezuelan migration, economic situation, rampant corruption, high levels of inequality, but above all is the country's historic peace accord that ended over half a century of armed conflict.
