    Falklands: Argentine professor visits Stanley and offers proposal to “end the dispute”

    According to Mr Kohen 20 point proposal, residents would be given dual Argentine/British nationality.

    Argentine Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies of Geneva, Marcelo Kohen, has studied disputes and resolutions in different parts of the world. Last Monday Kohen was in the Falkland Islands and at a public meeting in Stanley, he presented a proposal to put “an end to the dispute”.

    Falkland Islanders mark Commonwealth Day with a range of events

    On six continents around the globe, the currently 53 countries of the Commonwealth marked Commonwealth Day earlier in the week. The day included messages to the Commonwealth from Her Majesty the Queen as well as the UK Prime Minister, both of which have been covered by MercoPress. However, the Falkland Islands also reaffirmed its ties to the Commonwealth over recent days both within the Islands and elsewhere in the world.

    Falklands' election motivates support resolution in US House of Representatives

    Resolution, 650, was submitted by Representatives Mario Diaz Balart, Derek Kilmer and George Holding, and referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

    The United States 115th Congress has tabled resolution 650 recognizing the results of the free and fair elections for the new Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands held on 9 November 2017. The resolution, 650, was submitted last week by Representatives Mario Diaz Balart, Derek Kilmer and George Holding, and referred to the Committee on Foreign Affairs.

    JMC communiqué underlines self determination and UK's commitment post Brexit

    The two-day British Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council meeting in London ended on Wednesday with a communiqué underlining self determination, (plus commitment to counter hostile sovereignty claims), constitutional relationship, disaster recovery, --following the sweeping damages caused by hurricanes--, tax transparency and Brexit.

    A delegation from the Falkland Islands attended on Tuesday 10 Downing Street where Prime Minister Theresa May welcomed leaders from ten British Overseas Territories Street for the start of their annual Joint Ministerial Council meeting. The Falklands' were represented by lawmakers MLA Teslyn Barkman, MLA Roger Edwards and Sukey Cameron OBE, Falklands government representative in London.

    Following a full day of activities in London in the framework of the annual British Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council meeting, the Falklands delegation said talks were very high level, and a wonderful opportunity to put forward the Islands concerns, such as Brexit, and listen to the issues faced by the other British Overseas Territories.

    Falklands and other BOTs leaders scheduled to meet with PM Theresa May

    During the meeting Mrs. May is expected to announce a further £70 million to help the relief efforts for BOTs  hit by hurricanes Irma and Maria

    Leaders from eleven British Overseas Territories, BTO, including the Falkland Islands will be meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday as part of the Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Committee, which begins in London, according to a release from 10 Downing Street.

    Argentine Senate head calls on UK for Falklands/Malvinas discussions

    “The government of Mrs. May should comply with its share of the agreements and sit down to discuss all issues including the Malvinas question”, said Senator Pinedo
