    UK economy grows at the slowest pace among world's wealthiest countries

    ONS said household spending grew by 1.8% last year, also the slowest annual rate since 2012. The slowdown was partly because of shoppers facing higher prices

    The UK economy expanded by less than previously thought in the last three months of 2017, official figures say. GDP grew by 0.4% in the October-to-December period, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, down from the initial estimate of 0.5%. The revision was due to slower growth in production industries, the ONS said.

    WW2 German bomb forces closure of London City Airport

    The bomb was found at George V Dock on Sunday during planned work at the east London airport.

    An operation to remove a 500kg World War Two bomb that has forced the closure of London City Airport will continue through the night. The airport has been shut all day and all flights cancelled, affecting up to 16,000 passengers, officials said.

    UK economy expands 0.5% in fourth quarter and 1.8% for the whole of 2017

    The production-side breakdown of GDP showed that the dominant services sector advanced 0.6% in the fourth quarter, the fastest pace in a year.

    The UK economy expanded at a slightly faster pace in the fourth quarter on services and manufacturing output, but the full-year growth was the weakest in five years, preliminary data from the Office for National Statistics showed. GDP grew 0.5% sequentially in the fourth quarter, while the rate was forecast to remain unchanged at 0.4%.

    A Falklands' Caracara escapes from London Zoo and spends ten days on the loose

    A powerful bird of prey native to the Falkland Islands was captured on Wednesday after escaping from London Zoo and spending 10 days on the loose. There were repeated sightings of the two-foot tall raptor, called a Striated Caracara, in Camden this week, with one report that it was seen “ripping into a whole cooked chicken”.

    Dublin does not accept direct rule from London in North Ireland

    The Stormont executive collapsed at the start of 2017 after a bitter row between the DUP and Sinn Féin over a failed energy scheme.

    The Irish government would expect to have a “real and meaningful involvement” in Northern Ireland if efforts to restore Stormont fail, the Irish prime minister has said. Leo Varadkar said he would not support a return to direct rule from London if time is called on talks to restore a power-sharing government in Belfast, and anticipated he would make a fresh bid for a deal in January.
