Falklands' cruise incident: all passengers safe and 90 hosted in Stanley

With support from a Royal Navy patrol, the Royal Air Force Search and Rescue helicopters and Falkland Islands emergency services, hundreds of passengers have been rescued from the French flagged mega yacht Le Boréal after it issued a distress call on Wednesday early morning to the north of the Falkland Islands.

Marriott agrees to buy Starwood, making it the largest hotel chain in the world

Marriott International has agreed to buy Starwood Hotels and Resorts in a $12.2 billion deal that will make it the largest hotel chain in the world. The boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved a merger agreement, Marriott announced this morning. The combined companies will operate or franchise more than 5,500 hotels with 1.1 million rooms worldwide. About 35% of the properties are outside the USA.

Cruise line adds kayak excursions in Antarctica, Falklands and South Georgia

Luxury cruise line Seaborn is adding a new adventure to its Antarctica voyages aboard 'Seabourn Quest' this season: Kayaking. Ventures by Seabourn optional kayak excursions will also be offered at South Georgia Island and Port Stanley, Falkland Islands. It's an expansion of the line's new “Ventures by Seabourn” excursions that launched last summer in other destinations.

Cruise season 2015/16 in Uruguay takes off 6 November; 170 calls expected

Uruguayan Tourism ministry officials announced that the country expects 170 calls from cruise vessels this coming season which is scheduled to begin 6 November and extend until 10 April 2016.

Ushuaia cruise season takes off: 331 calls estimated in 2015/16

The 2015/16 cruise season has taken off in Argentine Tierra del Fuego with the arrival on Monday, of 'Ushuaia' and 90 passengers, one of the 331 calls which are estimated according to Ushuaia authorities. Gianfranco Guardamagna head of the Tierra del Fuego Tourism Institute recalled the significance of the cruise industry for Ushuaia, since the austral city “commands 95% of all international Antarctic tourism”.

Polar operators keen on conducting citizen science projects

Field staff from the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operations (IAATO) and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) got together in Toronto last month in the first Polar field staff conference ever held. Seventy-five people attended over the three days representing 24 IAATO/AECO members, three governments, three universities and the World Wildlife Fund.
