    Marriott agrees to buy Starwood, making it the largest hotel chain in the world

    Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson will remain CEO of the combined company. Deal is expected to close in 2016, following shareholder and regulatory approvals.

    Marriott International has agreed to buy Starwood Hotels and Resorts in a $12.2 billion deal that will make it the largest hotel chain in the world. The boards of directors of both companies have unanimously approved a merger agreement, Marriott announced this morning. The combined companies will operate or franchise more than 5,500 hotels with 1.1 million rooms worldwide. About 35% of the properties are outside the USA.

     Pan American Health Organization has indicated that five cases of the Zika virus has been confirmed in Suriname.

    Jamaica's Ministry of Health is urging people to be more vigilant and to clean up their environment and destroy mosquito breeding sites, in light of the announcement by the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) that the Zika virus has been detected in a Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nation.

    Cruise season 2015/16 in Uruguay takes off 6 November; 170 calls expected

    Montevideo is expected to receive 109 calls of which three will stay overnight and during 22 days two cruise vessels will be docking simultaneously

    Uruguayan Tourism ministry officials announced that the country expects 170 calls from cruise vessels this coming season which is scheduled to begin 6 November and extend until 10 April 2016.

    Ushuaia cruise season takes off: 331 calls estimated in 2015/16

    Antarctic cruises sail across the Drake Passage to Antarctica peninsula, a full two days trip, which can later include south seas islands such as South Georgia

    The 2015/16 cruise season has taken off in Argentine Tierra del Fuego with the arrival on Monday, of 'Ushuaia' and 90 passengers, one of the 331 calls which are estimated according to Ushuaia authorities. Gianfranco Guardamagna head of the Tierra del Fuego Tourism Institute recalled the significance of the cruise industry for Ushuaia, since the austral city “commands 95% of all international Antarctic tourism”.

    Polar operators keen on conducting citizen science projects

    Field staff from the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operations (IAATO) and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) got together in Toronto last month in the first Polar field staff conference ever held. Seventy-five people attended over the three days representing 24 IAATO/AECO members, three governments, three universities and the World Wildlife Fund.

    Chile announces world's third largest fully protected marine area

    Combined, Nazca-Desaventuradas and Easter Island would protect more than 350,000 square miles, larger than Chile's total landmass.

    Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced this week the creation of the Nazca-Desaventuradas Marine Park, giving Chile claim to the largest marine reserve in the Americas -- as well as the Easter Island Marine Park, which will be the third-largest fully protected marine area in the world.
