    Union leader political rally in Buenos Aires to challenge Macri and his policies

    Moyano and his teamsters, supported by the bank employees and teachers unions are protesting against a 15% cap on the next round of salary negotiations

    The Argentine powerful teamsters union will be holding their first political rally in downtown Buenos Aires this Wednesday in a clear defiance of President Mauricio Macri's policies to combat inflation, launch the economy and attract foreign direct investors. Hugo Moyano a member of the unions' umbrella organization has promised to convene some 300.000 workers and has anticipated that any incidents will be the responsibility of the government.

    Falklands' second commercial air link invitation delivered to Uruguay

    Representatives from Argentina and the United Kingdom formally delivered on Monday, to the Uruguayan foreign minister a letter jointly issued by the two governments requesting assistance in contacting local airlines and inviting them to communicate their interest in establishing a new weekly scheduled air service to and from the Falkland Islands.

    Argentina is taking new steps to solidify its security relationship with the United States, a move that may be aimed at generating support — both political and material — for a shift toward more hard-line domestic crime-fighting policies. In a trip to the United States last week, Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich met with several top US officials to discuss security issues.

    Argentine January inflation 1.8%; minister admits it is a slower pace than expected

    Last year, the annual inflation reached 24.8%, well above the central bank's target for 2017, of between 12% and 17%.

    Argentina's Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by 1.8% in January 2018, after increasing 3.1% in December 2017, said the country's statistics office Indec. Despite the deceleration, the reading was higher than market expectations for the monthly consumer price inflation (+1.5%). The result was primarily influenced by higher costs for entertainment and culture (+3.5%).

    Falklands' second weekly commercial air link talks take off, and should crystallize by next October

    MLA Dr Barry Elsby said it was a very positive step forward for the Falklands, since “the additional flight will help us to improve our links with the world at large”

    The United Kingdom and Argentina, following on the September 2016 joint communiqué to establish additional air links with the Falkland Islands, jointly announced on Friday that third country airlines interested in such operations will be contacted. It is expected that by the end of February the commercial process will be initiated, led by the Falkland Islands, and sometime next October the new weekly air link, with a monthly call in Argentina, will become operational.

    Falklands angry with National Geographic; demands apology to the Islands and its people

    Anger has been expressed in the Falkland Islands this week over a letter which was sent to the Argentine Governor of Tierra del Fuego, Rosana Bertone, by a representative of the National Geographic Foundation. The letter, dated February 8, contains an apology for the appearance of the label ‘Falkland Islands’ instead of ‘Malvinas Islands’ on photos published on Instagram, which were taken here.

    Madrid warned “Playa Pesmar Uno” five times it was sailing into Argentine waters

    Spanish Fisheries Secretary Lopez Asenjo said “we are convinced that the position we were warning, repeatedly, was correct”, in reference to the blue box

    The Spanish Fishing Monitoring Center, CSP, located in Madrid has revealed it warned the trawler “Playa Pesmar Uno” five times that is was sailing into Argentine waters before it was finally arrested by the Argentine authorities, according to Alberto Lopez Asenjo, Spain's Fisheries Secretary, in an interview with the Vigo daily Atlantico.

    Argentina central bank holds benchmark rate at 27.25%; inflation data on Thursday

    The central bank lowered rates in each of the prior two decisions it had taken since government loosened its 2018 inflation target to 15%, from 8-12% previously

    Argentina’s central bank held its benchmark seven-day interbank lending rate at 27.25% on Wednesday, the monetary authority said in a statement, amid an increase in inflation expectations and “mixed signals” in prices so far this year.

    This Wednesday, the first ever budget flight from London to South America departs from Gatwick airport. Fares on the 14-hour Norwegian Air Shuttle flight to Buenos Aires start from £259 one-way. The seats are tightly packed and food and luggage cost extra, but the no-frills model of flying, so well established on short-haul routes, is becoming increasingly common on intercontinental flights.
