Embattled Chilean President Michelle Bachelet's chief of staff, Jorge Burgos, resigned Wednesday after a series of disagreements with his boss over policy issues. The government said Burgos quit for personal reasons, and named Chile's current ambassador to Uruguay, Mario Fernandez Baeza, as his replacement.
Argentina's YPF and Chile's Enap Sipetrol announced a joint project to expand the production of natural gas and crude from the offshore Magallanes Deposits, (PIAM), to the east of Magellan Strait Reserve. Former Argentine dictator Reynaldo Bignone and 14 other ex-military officials were found guilty by an Argentine court on Friday of conspiring to kidnap and assassinate leftist dissidents as part of the Operation Condor program. Bignone, 88, the highest ranking figure on trial, was sentenced to 20 years in jail. Fourteen of the remaining 16 defendants got eight to 25 years behind bars. Two were found not guilty.

Santiago will become the airline’s lengthiest long-haul route, taking 14 hours 40 minutes, nearly an hour more than the current longest flight of 13 hours 50 minutes service to Buenos Aires.
