  Scientists flock to Falklands for vital South Georgia future research strategy

  

  Fifteen scientists from institutes around the world gathered in the Falkland Islands this week to assess future scientific requirements for South Georgia. Project manager Dr Vicky Peck from the British Antarctic Survey based in Cambridge explained that the South Georgia Future Science project wanted to identify what the scientific needs of the island were and how they could best be facilitated.

  The Falkland Islands cultural diversity will be celebrated with a whole day of events on Saturday, 10 October. The Falklands with a population of 3.000 according to the latest census, has integrated people born in 53 different countries, with predominance from Britain, St Helena and Chile.

  Eirik Raude oil rig operating in Falklands, faces scrapping after contract ends January 2016

  

  Ocean Rig, the Greek offshore drilling contractor has highlighted in its latest fleet update two rigs coming out of employment shortly with no immediate prospects. Both rigs have little or no “further prospects of employment” according to Ocean Rig and will be cold stacked while disposing of or scrapping the rigs is considered.

  Falklands' bound Argentine 'militant' yacht rescued abandoned by fisheries protection vessel

  

  An Argentine flagged yacht “La Sanmartiniana” belonging to a political group which responds to Argentine president Cristina Fernandez son, Maximo Kirchner, was detected abandoned in the high seas by the Falklands Islands Fisheries Protection Vessel, FPV Protegat and is being towed to Port Stanley, reports a release from the Falklands government.

  Falkland Islands celebrate 275th Anniversary of “Rule, Britannia!” with new crown coin

  

  The Treasury of the Government of the Falkland Islands has issued (18th September) a new collector coin commemorating the 275th anniversary of the composition of the tune “Rule, Britannia!” The staunchly patriotic British song was set to music by Thomas Arne in 1740, adapted from the poem, “Rule, Britannia,” by James Thomson.

  Noble Falklands Ltd oil activities are 'illegal' and 'clandestine' claims Argentina

  

  The Argentine government has declared “illegal” and “clandestine” the hydrocarbons' exploration activities carried out off the Falklands/Malvinas Islands by the Houston based Noble Falklands Limited company, according to a resolution by the country's Energy Office.

  Falklands' stand visited by Foreign Secretary Hammond and MP Rosindell

  

  Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, MP Andrew Rosindel and Charles Tannock MEP, were among several personalities that visited the Falkland Islands stand at the Conservative Conference which is taking place in Manchester. He was met by Falklands lawmakers Jan Cheek and Roger Edwards, and Sukey Cameron, head of FIGO, Falklands' government office in London.

  “Malvinas Hall” in Comodoro Rivadavia recalls Air Force strikes command against UK Task Force

  

  The room in Comodoro Rivadavia from where the Argentine Air Force command operated its attacks on the Falkland Islands during the 1982 conflict has been renamed 'Malvinas Hall', and has been declared part of the city's heritage, a place where students and visitors can recall “the ever present Argentine claim over the Malvinas Islands, and the heroism of its pilots”.
