    Argentina hosts UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism in Mendoza

    “The involvement of UNWTO, means we can assert that the whole world convenes in Mendoza to support tourism in Argentina” minister Gustavo Santos said.

    To highlight the relevance of wine and gastronomy as key components of tourism development, the 22nd UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism was held in Mendoza, Argentina on 29-30 September. The Conference was co-organized by UNWTO and the Ministry of Tourism of Argentina, in collaboration with the Region of Mendoza and the Chamber of Tourism of Argentina.

    Falklands' iconic Whalebone Arch in Stanley again open to view after weeks of repair

    Falkland Islands' newly-restored Whalebone Arch was revealed this week. After six weeks of sanding and repairing and coating with epoxy resin, the iconic structure in Stanley is now open to view, and to the elements.

    Falklands' considering investigation of Stanley Airport future development options

    The paper recommends development options be based on attracting the regular South America based air ambulance providers, Aerocardal (Gulfstream G150)

    The Falkland Islands' Executive Council has considered a proposal to investigate the future development options for Stanley Airport. A paper put to ExCo by the General Manager Aviation Services and Director of Civil Aviation was described as not a comprehensive review of all the options, but gives approval for the Chief Executive to develop clear terms of reference for a study which can define the realistic potential usage options for Stanley Airport.

    Growing number of Chinese tourists visit Antarctica, but with carbon credits

    Chinese tourists fly to Ushuaia where they will board a cruise for a tour of the Antarctic Peninsula, or combined with the Falklands and South Georgia

    The number of Chinese visitors to the Antarctic Peninsula is growing rapidly, adding to concerns over the fragile ecosystem. It’s almost a three-week trip and will cost at least 100,000 Yuan (US$15,000), and before a foot is set on frozen land, special boots are needed to walk over a sponge mat soaked in disinfectant. Besides this season Chinese tourists will have to purchase carbon credits to offset emissions.

    Caribbean Islands open and fully operational for cruise passengers

    “We are open and welcoming visitors,” said Racquel Brown, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority.

    More than 40 islands visited by cruise ships on Caribbean itineraries have a message they want to share: They are open, fully operational, welcoming ships full of cruise passengers and hoping more will follow. Included are places that saw some damage from the September hurricanes but have already recovered.

    Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay launch bid to host the 2030 World Cup

    FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with the three leaders in Buenos Aires earlier in the day but did not take part in the news conference.

    Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay formally launched South America’s three-nation bid to host the 2030 World Cup on Wednesday and said Argentina would likely host the majority of the tournament’s stadiums. The presidents of the three nations, who announced in August that they were teaming up to bid for the tournament, kicked off the campaign at the Casa Rosada, Buenos Aires’ government palace.

    Monarch collapse and ''rescuing'' 100.000 tourists will cost about £60m

    Monarch Airlines ceased trading on Monday and all future flights and holidays have been cancelled. Administrators said 1,858 workers had lost their jobs

    Flights returning 110,000 holidaymakers from overseas after Monarch's collapse will cost about £60m, according to the UK airline regulator. Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has called the flights the UK's biggest repatriation exercise in peacetime.

    JetSMART offers ultra low rates for Santiago/Punta Arenas beginning 18 December

    “Since we started business we have received thousands of petitions from our clients in Tarapacá and Magallanes to reach those destinations”, said CEO Estuardo Ortiz

    JetSMART, Chile's ultra low cost airline is planning to link Santiago with Punta Arenas as of next December, charging some 8.000 Chilean Pesos for each leg, plus boarding taxes, 15.500 Pesos, according to the company's CEO Estuardo Ortiz. The exchange rate is approx Pesos 600 to the US dollar.

    Supplies in Falklands ready for shipping to Antarctica's Port Lockroy, the most remote post office

     Port Lockroy on Goudier Island, was home to explorers and whalers before becoming the first permanent British base established on the Antarctic Peninsula.

    Brooms to clean bird droppings, along with thousands of toy penguins, are among tons of items being shipped out to the UK's most remote post office. Each year, four scientists become postmasters, manning the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust's post office at Port Lockroy in Antarctica for four months.

    Falklands promotes investment in the tourist cruise sector

    The Falklands receives some 56.000 cruise visitors during the summer season extending from October to April

    In response to calls from the Falklands cruise sector the Falkland Islands Tourism Board (FITB) has launched a new grant scheme to encourage investment in the cruise sector. Executive Director of FITB Stephanie Middleton said “Cruise operators tell us that they are keen to see more options for visitors when coming on shore.
