  Falkland Islands: new Director of Natural Resources next month

  

  The Falkland Islands Government has announced the appointment of Dr Andrea Clausen as the new Director of Natural Resources. Andrea is due to take up her post in October 2019 and will be working with John Barton to ensure that there is a unified approach to the handover of duties across the agriculture, fisheries and veterinary departments. This appointment comes following a comprehensive search and selection process.

  Falklands second flight, this time to Sao Paulo set to start in November

  

  Falkland Islands' lawmaker MLA Barry Elsby told the Legislative Assembly that the new Latam flight to São Paulo is set to start in November, adding that contractual negotiations with the air carrier are “well advanced and nearing completion.”

  Family of Falklands Fisheries officer killed in Brazil donate £50,000

  

  Cash raised for a Falkland Islands' biker injured in a crash in Brazil was given away to help others after his death, an inquest heard. Christopher Peck, 34, originally from Workington, but who was working in the Islands was two weeks into an 18-week Uruguay to Canada trip when he was hit by a lorry.

  Falklands fishing companies launch new website and promotional video

  

  The Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association, (FIFCA) hosted a reception at the Historic Dockyard Museum in Stanley on Thursday the 31st May to launch their new website and promotional video. In attendance were invited guests that included HE the Governor Mr Nigel Phillips CBE along with Members of the Legislative Assembly, representatives of the Falkland Islands Government Fisheries Department, FIFCA members as well as the local media and press outlets.

  Falklands' Loligo squid “doing well” in first month of the fishery

  

  Twenty thousand tons of Loligo squid have been caught during the first month of the fishery, so it is “doing well,” the Falkland Islands Senior Fisheries Scientist Sasha Arkhipkin confirmed to Penguin News during the last week of March.

  Falklands: Spanish trawlers hope the Loligo season evolves with “no incidents”

  

  Spanish trawlers involved in the Loligo squid catching season in the Falkland Islands are hoping that this year the operation will evolve with “no incidents”, recalling that the previous season was abruptly stopped because of accidental deaths of sea mammals caught in nets.

  Falklands' second Loligo season very promising but by-catch of fur seals forces an exclusion zone

  

  The Falkland Islands second Loligo squid season has taken with very good catches, but good catches also means abundance of the cephalopodus, and... of those sea mammals that feed on them. Because of this a temporary exclusion zone around Beauchene Island was put in place on Thursday making this productive area for Loligo squid out of bounds to fishing vessels.

  Penguins in addition to being stealthy swimmers and keen hunters, unique video footage has revealed a dark side: a video camera attached to the back of a gentoo penguin swimming off the Falkland Islands captures a violent underwater scuffle where penguins steal food right out of each other’s beaks.
