    Unemployment in Magallanes drops slightly to 3.8% in April/June quarter

    ”Normally unemployment at this time of the year (winter) is higher than in summer months, but it actually dropped slightly” said Carlos Abarzúa

    Unemployment in Magallanes region, extreme south of Chile, was 3.8% in the second quarter of the year, which represents a 1.5 percentage point increase over the last twelve months despite a slight fall of 0.2 percentage point compared to the previous quarter (March/May) of 2015, according to the latest release from the INE stats office.

    Punta Arenas rescues semi-submersible rig stranded in the port's muddy bottom

    The Zhen Hua 28 was stuck in a sand and muddy bottom, probably up to four meters deep, but was impressive because of its size

    A semi-submersible rig of Chinese origin commissioned to Total and which grounded 200 meters from the coast in Punta Arenas following strong winds and tides that let it lose from its moorings in the port, has been rescued on the high tide. Apparently the huge vessel has not suffered major 'visible damages', reports La Prensa Austral.

    The fishing industry in Punta Arenas, extreme south of Chile, is going through a serious recession --30% fall in landings-- which is not only impacting the activity of the four main companies, with lesser jobs, but also port operations and the price of freight as volumes are smaller, warned this week Enrique Gutierrez, General Manager of Pesca Chile.

    The results of the 2014/2015 cruise season were considered 'positive' for Punta Arenas, in the extreme south of Chile, which received 100 vessel calls, of which 40 international and 60 domestic, totaling 56.383 visitors, a similar number to the previous season.

    Punta Arenas cruise visitors numbers up 30% during the 2014/15 season

    Windy Punta Arenas is the main port of call for cruise vessels in the south of Chile. This season 48 visited the city.

    Cruise visitors to Punta Arenas, extreme south of Chile during this last 2014/15 season increased by 30%, with 48 vessel calls between last October and April this year, according to Chilean migration and international police records. This represents 78.872 cruise passengers, and is an increase over the 35 calls from the previous season 2013/2014.

    How do you manage to make the mandatory phyto-sanitary controls when 4.000 visitors come ashore on the same day virtually at the same time, and the port is not a major terminal. Particularly when the country is a main producer of fruit and other agriculture goods and must act with the utmost jealousy to ensure its privileged position as a world leading exporter.

    Falklands contribution to the development of sheep farming in Magallanes

    In the late 1880 sheep from the Falklands were shipped to the extreme south of Chile to help start the industry

    The close historic and farming links between the Falkland Islands and the Magallanes Region, were underlined in a recent article by Punta Arenas researcher Silvestre Fugellie dedicated to sheep farming, the 'golden fleece' that changed the economy of those barren lands in the extreme south of Chile over a century ago.
