    Punta Arenas port increased docking space should be ready early 2017

    Works on the extension of the Prat dock in the port of Punta Arenas picked up this last week and should be ready for the beginning of next year, including two dolphins and six jackets, which should enable all cruise passengers to land directly.

    Falklands mine clearance project receives a new £20m UK commitment

    MLA Mike Poole said UK commitment's to clear the Islands of mines is ”a welcome move and we remain willing to assist practically and logistically where we can.”

    The Falkland Islands Government, FIG, and Falkland Islanders have welcomed the announcement of a new £20m landmine clearance commitment by the UK which will make safe dozens of areas which have been unusable for residents and visitors. The project financed by the Foreign Office and Ministry of Defense will clear 46 minefields over the next two years and prepare for clearance another 27. So far more than 30 minefields have been cleared in the Falklands in recent years and this is in line with the UK obligations under the Ottawa Treaty.

    The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) welcomed the UK/Argentina future cooperation agreement to remove all obstacles limiting the economic growth and development of the Falkland Islands and points out it will be represented at future discussions on these matters, the removal of sanctions on hydrocarbons, fisheries, shipping and tourism, and underlines that “sovereignty of the Falkland Islands will not be part of these discussions”.

    Falkland Islands Government welcomes better relationship with Argentina

    The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has welcomed the agreement made between the Argentine and United Kingdom Governments, laid out under this morning’s joint statement. Speaking to the media, Members of the Falkland’s Legislative Assembly stated they “looked forward to a better relationship with Argentina”, especially in the areas of hydrocarbons, fisheries, shipping and tourism.

    “Harmony of the Seas” tragic accident during a security drill in Marseille

    The accident happened when one of the ship's life boats with five people on board became detached during a “simple security drill” while a stopover in Marseille.

    One person has been killed and four others left seriously injured in Marseille after an accident on board the Harmony of the Seas, the world's largest cruise liner. The fatal accident comes just three months after the cruise liner hit the high seas for its much-hyped inaugural voyage. The victim was from the Philippines and was aged 42-years-old. The other victims were three Filipinos and an Indian man.

Ms Malcorra said Argentina wants to end the era of confrontation over the South Atlantic islands.

    Falkland Islands Holdings declares lower profitability; plans name change

    FIH Plc said the timing of the name change was “heavily linked to a recovery in the oil price” and recent progress by Premier Oil PLC was “very encouraging”.

    Falkland Islands Holdings PLC on Thursday tabled plans to change its name to FIH Group PLC, as it said profitability in the first five months of its financial year was at a lower level than the prior year. Falkland Islands Holdings, which owns services businesses based in the UK and the Falkland Islands, said it will change its name to FIH Group, subject to shareholder approval, to “more properly reflect the balance of the group's activities”. Its activities are now predominantly in the UK and Europe.
