    Premier Oil Outline Procurement and Infrastructure Plan in the Falkland Islands

    As Mercopress have reported over recent months, Premier Oil continue to progress their Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) process for the Sea Lion oil discovery. As a next step in this process, earlier this week Premier Oil plc provided details of their intended approach to both procurement and infrastructure to support the discovery to the north of the Falkland Islands.

    Falklands fishing companies launch new website and promotional video

    The idea of the event was to further raise the profile of the Falklands fisheries both domestically and internationally effectively re-branding FIFCAS

    The Falkland Islands Fishing Companies Association, (FIFCA) hosted a reception at the Historic Dockyard Museum in Stanley on Thursday the 31st May to launch their new website and promotional video. In attendance were invited guests that included HE the Governor Mr Nigel Phillips CBE along with Members of the Legislative Assembly, representatives of the Falkland Islands Government Fisheries Department, FIFCA members as well as the local media and press outlets.

    Falklands government to focus on family-friendly legislation in 2018/19

    In setting its legislative priorities for the next twelve months, the Falkland Islands Government has signalled an intention to focus on legislation of interest to families. The Islands are internally self-governing, with much law created locally or adapted from elsewhere in the world. The program for the next year was published this week alongside their fiscal budget for the year.

    Falklands confirms exchange of fisheries data with Argentina will resume “in short order”

    Speaking to the Fisheries Committee, Mr. Barton responded to concerns expressed by members and reassured them that the exchange of data would be mutual.

    The Falkland Islands Director of Natural Resources John Barton confirmed this week that exchange of fisheries data will resume “in short order” following the resumption of fisheries talks with Argentina last month. Mr. Barton confirmed that proposals for joint research cruises are being drawn up and another meeting has been scheduled to take place in London in late 2018.

The British Forces Broadcasting Service operating from MPA has informed that Falklands' viewers will receive the best football experience possible from Russia by showing all the England matches live on the Sky News Channel.

    Falkland Islands fisheries review recommends ITQs for Illex squid

    The report recommends the Illex fishery be brought into the ITQ system, with 60 to 75% of ITQ assigned on historical catches and the remainder up for tender.

    Moving the Illex fishery into the ITQ system and improved catch verification requirements are among the recommendations made by an independent review of the Individual Transferable Quota (ITQ) system published by the Falkland Islands government, FIG, this week.

    Michael Barnier, Brussels chief Brexit negotiator, triggered the controversy when he argued UK companies should be excluded from the Galileo project

    United Kingdom ministers are unilaterally considering stopping EU access to the Galileo satellite earth station in the Falklands and Ascension, according to reports in the UK press. The move comes after Brussels chief Brexit negotiator, Michael Barnier, stated that UK companies would have to be excluded from the development of sensitive Galileo infrastructure following Brexit due to security concerns.
